The second regional meeting of the Islands Indian Ocean project took place from June 9 to 11, 2025. Its aim is to help the Comoros, Maldives, Mauritius and Seychelles reduce the risks associated with chemicals and waste. The project, dedicated to small island states, will enable the local development of a circular economy to recycle and manage this potential pollution.
The event, supported by the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), brought together representatives from the Comoros, Maldives, Mauritius and, of course, the Seychelles. This appointment had been set back in 2023, when this project was launched to improve the management and recycling of waste and chemicals in the four island countries of the South-West Indian Ocean zone. UNDP Africa, which is monitoring the project, has secured a budget of 13.4 million USD (11.6 million euros). If all goes well, the islands concerned will be able to eliminate this pollution risk, without outside help, by 2027.
