Nairobi, September 4, 2025 – Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have signed a major cooperation agreement aimed at accelerating the development of geothermal energy in East Africa. This cooperation project between Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and France in the field of geothermal energy establishes a framework designed to reinforce East Africa’s position as a leader in renewable energies in Africa.

The agreement combines Kenya’s expertise in deep geothermal power generation with French know-how in direct applications of geothermal heat. This initiative will unlock the region’s vast geothermal potential, particularly in Tanzania and Uganda, before being extended to other countries. It will help strengthen climate resilience, stimulate green growth and foster sustainable development. The partnership is also intended to be a model of mutually beneficial South-South-North cooperation, creating shared value for all stakeholders.
