Mauritania is currently facing a major environmental crisis, caused by persistent drought episodes that are worsening the living conditions of the most vulnerable populations. This situation highlights the close links between climate change, food insecurity and growing internal migration, particularly to neighboring Senegal. Meteorological data show that Mauritania has been experiencing below-average weather for several years now. The water deficit is causing rapid degradation of pastures and arable land, as well as increasing scarcity of drinking water resources. Nomadic herders and farmers, particularly in the Assaba and Hodh El Gharbi regions, are seeing their livelihoods threatened. The decline in local production is exacerbating malnutrition and dependence on external food aid.
