The biochar is a coal of vegetable origin obtained by pyrolysis of biomass of organic matters of various origin. It was discovered about 6000 years ago by the Amerindians living in the Amazon, who understood that the use of this coal could transform their poor and infertile soils into fertile ones. Today, research on biochar is revisiting its origins and its use, including its impact on improving the fertility of tropical soils facing severe degradation.
