Algeria faces major climatic challenges, being one of the world’s “hotspots” most impacted by climate change. The main challenges include rising average temperatures, more erratic rainfall, extreme weather events (heatwaves, droughts, floods), and land degradation, with some 40,000 hectares lost annually to erosion affecting 13 million hectares.

These changes are seriously affecting ecosystems, agriculture, water resources, the economy and health. For example, declining agricultural yields and diminishing water resources are serious threats to the country’s food security and sustainable development.
