Niger’s authorities have announced the imminent launch of industrial copper mining in its northern desert region, in a bid to diversify the country’s mining production, which is particularly rich in uranium. A mining permit has been granted to a national company, Compagnie minière de l’Aïr (Cominair SA), in Tabelot and Dabaga, two communes in the Agadez region (north), said the government in a cabinet communiqué consulted by Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Sunday February 23.
