COP30″ refers to the 30th<\/sup> International Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This COP follows on from COP 28 ( DUbai 2023) and COP 29 ( Baku, 2024). <\/p>\n

Date and venue of COP30<\/h2>\n

COP30 will take place from November 10 to 21, 2025<\/strong> in Bel\u00e9m, capital of the northern Brazilian state of Para.<\/p>\n

This city of almost 1.5 million inhabitants lies on the estuary of the Tocantins and Par\u00e1 rivers, at the gateway to the Amazon rainforest.<\/p>\n

Context<\/h2>\n

Brazil, a major oil-producing country<\/h3>\n

Brazil is the world’s 8th-largest<\/sup> oil producer (with 3.4 Mb\/d by 2024), the largest in Latin America, and plans to increase production even further in the future (like the two previous COP hosts). This ambition is ” problematic, but not specific to Brazil <\/em>“, notes Christian de Perthuis, founder of the Climate Economics Chair. ” The majority of oil and gas players share this orientation<\/em> “. <\/p>\n

Petrobras’ plan to exploit the offshore “Equatorial Margin” deposit (which extends over 350,000 km2<\/sup>, some 500 km from the mouth of the Amazon), with its considerable potential, is opposed by NGOs. ” You can’t be a climate leader and at the same time intend to multiply fossil fuel production<\/em>,” laments Suely Araujo, former president of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and member of the Brazilian NGO collective Climate Observatory. <\/p>\n
