Extreme weather conditions and the effects of climate change are affecting all aspects of socio-economic development in Africa, exacerbating hunger, insecurity and population displacement, warns the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in a report published in May 2025.<\/p>\n

In South Sudan, for example, the devastating floods that have hit the country in recent months have deprived thousands of herders of their most precious assets: goats, cows and other livestock. The latter are essential to people’s lives and ancestral customs, particularly when it comes to weddings and cultural traditions. All this is in danger of being swept away or burnt up by the ravages of climate change.<\/p>\n
