Against a backdrop of growing environmental and economic challenges, Madagascar and the other member countries of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) are resolutely turning to the circular economy as a solution for the future.

Madagascar’s commitment to the circular economy is part of a broader dynamic within the Indian Ocean Commission. In September 2023, a ministerial conference on the blue and circular economy was held in Mauritius, bringing together the island states of Africa and the Indian Ocean. This meeting reaffirmed the collective commitment to the circular economy as a response to the challenges of climate, environmental and socio-economic vulnerability. More recently, on January 27 and 28, 2025, a crucial workshop was held in Mauritius, marking an important milestone in the realization of these commitments.
